The colorations of freshwater tropical fish are derived from iridescences or goniochromism; this is the property of certain surfaces, like the scales of the fish’s body, to change its color depending on the angle of viewing. Iridescence is what makes soap bubbles appear in rainbow colors and it is what makes freshwater tropical fish so attractive to look at, unlike pigmented saltwater fish. One must note that in common usage the term ‘tropical fish’ is said to refer to freshwater species exclusively, with seawater fish being called marine fish.

In an aquarium of freshwater tropical fish, you will either find wild-caught specimens straight from their original habitats, offspring of those living in captivity or hybrid species. Albino fish is a popular species of fish bred in captivity. True Albinos are white with sparkly red eyes, but there are also palely colored albino freshwater tropical fish. Some popular freshwater tropical fish hybrids include Tiger Muskellunge (hybrid between northern pike and muskellunge), splake (hybrid between Lake Trout and Brooke Trout), Hybrid sunfish (cross between two species of sunfish) and Saugeye (hybrid between Walleye and Sauger).

These hybrid fish have much stronger immune systems and much wider ranges of colors in comparison to freshwater tropical fish found in the wild. Some of the many thousands of tropical freshwater fish are the African Butterfly, Bengal Loach, Blue Tetra, Celebese Rainbow, Cory Cat, Guppy, Gourami, Paradise fish, Rosy Barb, Zebra fish and Red Fin Fish.

Keeping freshwater tropical fish away from their natural habitats maybe initially challenging, but once both the environment and the fish species start adapting only little alterations are required. Since you are raring tropical fish, you must remember to wash your tank and all related items with water only. Do not use any other cleaners or soap since residue left behind can kill your fish. You must also wash out any other decorations you get for your tank. Once you have washed all the items you must set up your fish tank and stand. Once you have done this you can set up the gravel and the other decorations for your tank. Once this is done you can fill your tank. You should refrain from pouring water directly into the tank as it can disturb the gravel at the bottom. You should pour water off a saucer instead to prevent your gravel and decorations from being dislodged.

Once you have done this you can place the cover of your tropical fish tank. Do not add any tropical fish yet as your tank has to run by itself for a little while. During this period you must inspect your tank and check if the water is clean. Once you have waited a few days you can begin to add your fish. When adding fish, only add one or two fish at a time.

Once you have finished adding your tropical fish to your tank, you can sit down and enjoy your aquarium.
