To properly set up a home aquarium it is important that you add an air pump. Aquarium air pump is a device that brings air into the aquarium and it may filtrate the water too. By adding oxygen to the water it helps the fish and plants to breath otherwise they will die. There are some things that you need to know about placing a aquarium air pump in your aquarium.

The Need For An Aquarium Air Pump

Almost all aquariums will need an aquarium air pump. In most cases, the air pump pumps air through the tubes, into the water and through the filter. They provide the needed oxygen that most tropical, saltwater and freshwater fish need for survival. There are different types of air pumps. The type of aquarium you have and the number of fish you have in your tank will determine what type of aquarium air pump you should buy.

Air Stones And Bubble Wands

One of the easiest and most common aquarium air pumps are air stones and the bubble wands. These are ideal for smaller aquariums and tanks. With this system, one end is attached to tubing and air circulates through the tubing and into the water through the stone. This type of air pump circulates air while creating bubbles in the water.

Under Gravel Aquarium Air Pumps

The under gravel aquarium air pumps are those systems that are place under the gravel in the bottom of the tank. The air is pumped through tube and then up through the underwater gravel. This type air pump is better suited for larger aquariums or tanks. The under gravel air pump is nice because it is easy to hide inside of the aquarium and it gives it a more natural look.

How To Use An Aquarium Air Pump

Installing and using the aquarium air pump is easy. There will be instructions that come with the air pump just follow those but basically you take the air pump out from the box and place it in the aquarium and turn it on. If you have an air pump that is attached to a filter, then you will need to clean it frequently as it does get dirty. Read the instructions closely. If you have any product specific questions or unsure of any aspects of your air pump, most air pump suppliers have a toll free number on their box that you can call or simply ask your local aquarium or pet shop.

Aquariums are wonderful additions to any home. The colorful fish are beautiful and very relaxing to watch in their underwater world. However, fish are like other animals. They will get aquarium fish diseases. Many of these diseases can be avoided or prevented. However, there are treatments available for each disease. These treatments are usually effective if the disease is noticed and diagnosed in its early stages. Here are some of the most common aquarium fish diseases and their treatments.

New Tank Syndrome

New tank syndrome is an aquarium fish disease that usually occurs when you add new fish to your aquarium. This is when your new fish die within a few hours of being added to your tank. There are no signs of illness or disease, and the fish will just die. One of the best ways to prevent this is to float the fish before adding them to the tank. When you buy fish, they are sent home in a plastic bag or cup. Simply put this plastic bag or cup into the water and let it float for a couple of hours before letting the fish go into the aquarium. The main cause of new tank syndrome is stress.

Fin Rot

Fin rot is also a common aquarium fish disease. Fin rot is very noticeable because the fins and other soft tissues of the fish become fray and broken. It may appear as if other fish are eating at their fins. There is medication for the aquarium fish disease. It is sold in most pet stores and you should use this medication at the first sign of fin rot. Untreated fin rot will lead to other more serious infections.

Gill Worms

Another aquarium fish disease is gill worms. This is a condition where the fish will appear to have worms hanging from its gills. Many times the fish will look as if it is gasping for air when they have gill worms. This is because the gill worms are blocking air from circulating through their gills. There are anti-parasite medications for this aquarium fish disease. Heavy use of an air pump may also help comfort the fish and help him get rid of the gill worms.

Ick

Ick is a fungus that grows on the skin of the fish. It has a cotton type of appearance. An unclean tank usually causes Ick. It is usually treated with antifungal medication or a salt bath. It is very important that you treat Ick at its first site because it is highly contagious and will spread to other fish in the aquarium.

In an aquarium tank, there are numerous elements that must mesh together perfectly for life to be sustained. Nature itself is immaculate, indescribable and in trying to replicate it the same precautions must be taken that have evolved on the planet through the millennia. An aquarium is a life-like ocean, self-sustaining, interconnected ecosystem of water, fish and plants. It is complicated and it is fragile, but in the end, one of the most important pieces of the puzzle is not that complicated or that fragile at all. Just like humanity is dependent on the sun, so are the smallest fish and the simplest plants. In an aquarium, the sun must be mimicked or else life will fail. For this reason, aquarium lighting is essential in any tank, whether salt-water or fresh-water, regardless of how many fish or plants are contained within it. Any aquarium owner must educate him or her self on the type of aquarium lighting available, and how best to use it to bring about optimal results.

Lighting The Way

For plants, photosynthesis is the process of life, and light begins that process. Plants are able to transform light into energy, resulting in the creation of oxygen as a byproduct, a crucial element in any aquarium. However, algae species rely on light too, and in a tank algae is the enemy. An aquarium becomes a delicate balance of plants, nutrients, light and carbon dioxide. If the balance is off too much algae will grow or the plants and fish life will be unable to thrive. Aquarium lighting is measured in everything from watts to Kelvin, each measurement referring to a different type of energy output. However, each of these measurements is essential to balancing the aquarium lighting perfectly.

However, some tanks are fish-only tanks, and therefore, the aquarium lighting needs to focus solely on the fish. The specific requirements of plant life will not factor into this arrangement. This type of aquarium lighting is often sold in packages for beginners. The package comes complete with lights, bulbs and attachments. However, these packages are usually designed for beginner fish such as guppies and goldfish. Advanced fish life will still require advanced aquarium lighting. With specialized bulbs, these lighting systems are rather self-sufficient. Hoods help to concentrate the light on specific spectrums, and in the end the natural day-night cycle of light can be replicated in any aquarium. Specific bulbs can also be substituted in to change the color of the light. While these do not directly affect the fish, they help to alter the color of the aquarium environment bringing out the beauty of the fish and pleasing the onlooker
